Sending applications into silence is frustrating. The good news: most rejection causes are fixable in an evening. Here are the 11 we see most.

1. Missing keywords from the job ad

If the ad says "Salesforce" and you wrote "CRM tools", a keyword search skips you.

Tip: Fix it now: paste your resume and the ad into the free ATS checker and add the missing terms you genuinely have.

2. A layout the ATS can't read

Columns, tables, text boxes and graphics can scramble your content. See our ATS resume format guide.

3. No results, only duties

"Responsible for" lists don't show impact. Swap in verbs from our action verbs list and add outcomes.

4. No numbers at all

Quantify volume, scale or time. Our guide on adding metrics without data has 20 examples.

5. Generic, untailored resume

One resume for every job matches no job well. Adjust the summary and top bullets each time.

6. Job title mismatch

If your title was "Ninja" and they're hiring a "Software Engineer", add the standard title.

7. Typos and inconsistency

Mixed date formats, inconsistent tense and spelling errors suggest carelessness. Read it aloud once.

8. Too long or too short

One page for early career, two for experienced. Cut anything older than 10–15 years unless it's highly relevant.

9. Weak or missing summary

Open with 2–3 lines: target title, years of experience, top 2–3 skills, one proof point.

10. Unprofessional details

Old email addresses, broken LinkedIn links, a photo where it isn't expected. Small, fixable, and noticed.

11. Applying too late

Many roles fill from the first applicants. Apply in the first week when you can.

Warning: Don't "fix" rejection by inventing experience or numbers. It fails at interview stage and can follow you.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I get rejected without an interview?

Usually a mix of missing keywords, a resume not tailored to the role, or a layout the ATS couldn't parse. Sometimes the role was filled internally — that part you can't control.

How many applications does it take to get an interview?

It varies hugely by field and market. Tailored applications consistently convert better than mass applications.

Should I apply if I don't meet every requirement?

Yes, if you meet most core requirements. Job ads often list wishes, not hard rules.
