Before a recruiter reads your resume, software usually reads it first. That software is an Applicant Tracking System (ATS). If it can't read your resume, it doesn't matter how good your experience is.

What is an Applicant Tracking System?

An ATS is software companies use to manage hiring. It is common at large employers and increasingly at small ones. It does three things:

  1. Parsing: extracts text from your PDF or DOCX and turns it into structured data (name, experience, skills).
  2. Ranking: compares your keywords with the job description.
  3. Filtering: lets recruiters search, sort and filter candidates — some setups also use knockout questions or match thresholds.

How ATS parsing actually works

ATS does not see your design. It sees raw text.

  • Two-column layouts: some parsers read straight across both columns, mixing your dates with your skills.
  • Tables, text boxes and images: many systems, especially older ones, skip them or scramble them.
  • Headers and footers: contact details placed there may be ignored.

Tip: Not sure your layout survives? Read our guide to the ATS resume format that works.

How ATS ranking works

After parsing, the ATS and the recruiter look for:

  • Exact keyword matches: if the ad says "Kubernetes", writing only "K8s" may not match. Recruiters search for exact terms.
  • Title match: "Senior Frontend Engineer" vs "Frontend Ninja".
  • Skill frequency and recency: recent, repeated use counts for more.
  • Clear section headings: Experience, Education, Skills.

How to check your ATS score

  1. Upload your CV to the free CvPrais CV builder.
  2. Paste the job ad.
  3. Get an instant match percentage and the missing keywords.

We show what you have versus what the ad wants, without inventing achievements. Missing numbers become [X%] placeholders that you fill with real data. You can also run a quick check with the ATS resume checker.

Conclusion

Your resume has two readers: the software and the human. Make it ATS-friendly first, then make it compelling for people. Avoid the 12 resume mistakes that get you auto-rejected and pick a clean ATS-proof resume template.

Frequently asked questions

Will a PDF work for ATS?

Yes, if it is a text-based, single-column PDF. Avoid scanned or image-only PDFs — there is no text to read.

Do all companies use ATS?

Not all, but most large employers and many startups do, using systems such as Workday, Greenhouse and Lever.

Does CvPrais beat ATS?

We format for ATS parsing and keyword match, but no tool can guarantee an interview — every company configures its ATS differently.
