Canva makes beautiful resumes. The question is whether the software reading your resume sees the same thing you do.
A note on honesty: some articles claim to have "tested 50 Canva templates". We haven't run a formal lab test, and we won't pretend we did. What follows is how ATS parsing works, which design elements commonly break it, and how you can test your own file in two minutes.
Why many Canva resumes have parsing problems
Canva is a design tool. Each text block is placed freely on a canvas. When exported to PDF, the reading order of those blocks depends on how they were created — not on how they look.
Common problems:
- Reading order scrambled: the sidebar's skills appear between two job entries.
- Text boxes ignored or merged: headings stick to the wrong section.
- Icons instead of words: a phone icon followed by a number is fine for humans; the parser just sees a number.
- Skill bars and charts: no text, so no keywords.
- Fancy fonts: some decorative fonts export characters the parser can't map.
How to test your Canva resume in 2 minutes
- Download as PDF Standard (not flattened).
- Open it, press Ctrl/Cmd + A, copy, and paste into Notepad or TextEdit.
- Read it top to bottom. Is your name first? Are job titles next to their dates? Are skills in one place?

Tip: Even a beautiful Canva resume can work for networking, email applications to a person, or a portfolio. Just keep a plain version for portals.

- Free-placed text boxes
- Reading order uncertain
ATS-safe template:
- One reading order, top to bottom
- Text labels instead of icons
- Standard headings
- Real, selectable text throughout
How to fix a Canva resume
- Pick a one-column Canva template, or move sidebar content into the main column.
- Replace skill bars with a plain list: "Advanced: Excel, SQL. Intermediate: Python."
- Delete icons or add text labels next to them.
- Rename creative headings to standard ones.
- Re-export and re-test.
Warning: Don't put your whole resume inside a single image or background graphic. To an ATS, that's a blank page.
