Resume vs CV: What's the Difference and Which Should You Use?
Resume vs CV explained: US vs UK/EU meanings, length, content, photos and format — and which one to send for your next job.
"Resume" and "CV" are used interchangeably, but they don't always mean the same thing. Which one you need depends on where you're applying and for what kind of job.
The short answer
- US and Canada: a resume is the 1–2 page job application document. A CV is a long academic record.
- UK, Ireland, EU, Africa, Asia, Australia: CV means the 1–2 page job document. "Resume" is understood but less common.
So a German "Lebenslauf", a UK "CV" and a US "resume" are nearly the same thing for most jobs.
Key differences
Length
- Resume: 1 page early career, 2 pages experienced
- Non-academic CV (UK/EU): 2 pages is standard
- Academic CV (US): no limit — often 4+ pages
Content
- Resume: tailored, achievement-focused, only what's relevant to this job
- Academic CV: complete history — publications, conferences, grants, teaching
Personal details
- US resume: no photo, no date of birth, no marital status
- UK CV: no photo
- DACH CV (Germany, Austria, Switzerland): photo and date of birth still common but optional
- France, Belgium, Spain: photo sometimes expected in traditional sectors
Tip: When in doubt, leave the photo out. You'll never be rejected for not including one, and it avoids bias issues.
Which should you use?
- Applying to a US company: resume
- Applying for a US academic or research role: academic CV
- Applying in the UK or EU: CV (in the 1–2 page sense)
- International company with an English job ad: follow the word in the ad
Format tips for both
Whatever you call it, if you apply through an online portal it goes through an ATS. Use one column, standard headings, real text. Our ATS resume format guide covers the details, and how to beat ATS explains why.
Warning: Don't send a 4-page academic CV to a corporate job. Cut it down to the relevant 2 pages.
Templates for both
All CvPrais resume and CV templates work for US resumes and European CVs. Upload your existing document to the free AI CV builder, paste the job ad, and it adapts the content to the role. Check the result with the ATS checker, then download as PDF or DOCX. Run a last ATS score check and get started on the CvPrais homepage.
Frequently asked questions
Is a CV the same as a resume?
In the UK, Ireland, Australia and much of Europe, 'CV' is the normal word for what Americans call a resume. In the US, a CV is a longer academic document.
Should I put a photo on my CV?
In the US, UK and Ireland, no. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland a photo is still common but optional. Follow the job ad and local norms.
How long should a CV be?
Outside academia, 1–2 pages. Academic CVs in the US can run several pages because they list publications and grants.
